About us

Welcome to the Aboriginal Front Door Society

The Aboriginal Front Door Society is a culturally safe, peer-designed, non-judgmental space for Aboriginal Peoples and their friends and family in the Downtown Eastside. We offer support, hope, and acceptance through Aboriginal cultural traditions, caring, and community.

The Aboriginal Front Door Society was founded in 2001 in response to the pressing needs of Indigenous people in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Recognizing the lack of culturally safe and supportive services, a group of dedicated individuals—led by respected Elders and community activists—came together to create a space where Aboriginal people could find belonging, healing, and hope.

The Society faced significant challenges in its early days, including limited resources, funding barriers, and a growing service demand. Despite these obstacles, the founders’ unwavering commitment to the community led to early successes, such as offering daily peer support groups and culturally focused healing circles.

Over the years, the Society has evolved and expanded its services to meet the community's changing needs. Notable milestones include introducing addiction recovery support programs, housing assistance services, and partnerships with local health organizations. In 2015, the Society expanded its facilities to accommodate more community members and launched innovative programs integrating Indigenous culture into healing practices.

Today, the Aboriginal Front Door Society remains committed to restoring respect, dignity, and pride for Aboriginal Peoples. We continue to provide essential services and support to individuals and families in the Downtown Eastside, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
